How much does a boiler service cost?

Which? says a one-off gas boiler service should cost somewhere from £70 to £110, with an average of around £79 in its June 2025 survey of boiler customers. That price covers the service only. Repairs found along the way are extra. Here is what a proper service includes, why prices vary, and how to tell a real service from a quick look.

What changes the price
Which? points to the age and model of the boiler, where you live, who does the work and the time of year. In practice, the season makes a big difference. Engineers are far busier from October onwards, so booking in late spring or summer is easier.
Older boilers, especially conventional ones with a pilot light, take longer because more parts come apart. Oil boilers are a different job altogether and go on our oil boiler servicing page.
What a proper boiler service includes
A service should take at least 30 minutes, according to Which?. If someone is in and out in ten, it was not a service. The engineer should take the case off, look at the components inside and test the boiler while it fires.
At the end you should get a written record of what was checked and anything that needs attention. Keep it. Manufacturers usually ask for proof of annual servicing to keep a warranty valid.

Service only, or a service plan?
A one-off annual service suits most homeowners with a boiler under warranty. Which? found annual boiler cover averages £183 a year, and notes that the monthly payments can add up to more than paying for a service and occasional repairs yourself.

Does a boiler service include repairs?
No. A service checks, cleans and tests. If the engineer finds a worn part, the repair is priced separately, and we always tell you the cost before doing it.
Is a boiler service the same as a gas safety check?
Not quite. A gas safety check confirms an appliance is safe to use. A service goes further, cleaning and checking components so the boiler runs well. Landlords legally need the safety check every year; homeowners are strongly advised to get a service.
When is the best time to book?
Late spring and summer. Diaries fill up fast once the weather turns cold, and you find out about any problem before you actually need the heating.
