Boiler installation in Plymouth
Boiler installation in Plymouth takes in the big Victorian terraces along Mannamead Road, the busy flats over the shops on Mutley Plain and the newer flats around Royal William Yard. If you live in a flat just off Armada Way, the post-war centre is now a conservation area, so the flue route needs choosing with care. The council's conservation area maps and appraisals shows where each boundary runs, and we check it before suggesting a position. Homes on the climb up North Hill often have the boiler in a back kitchen with a long run to the top floor, which makes sizing worth getting right. Out at Royal William Yard, wind and salt off the Sound are hard on flue terminals, so we use the manufacturer's kit and keep it sheltered where we can.
We handle boiler replacement across the city, from Plympton and Plymstock to Crownhill, Southway and St Budeaux.
Local homes, local know-how
A centre rebuilt after the Second World War, Victorian terraces in Mutley, Stoke and Lipson, older houses and flats around the Barbican and Devonport, big post-war estates, and newer suburbs in Plympton and Plymstock. Mains gas across the city.

What we install most, from the Hoe to the suburbs
Like-for-like combi swaps in the suburbs
Most semis in Plympton and Plymstock already have a combi, usually in the kitchen or a cupboard over the stairs. Replacing one in the same spot is the simplest job we do. We reuse the flue position where it still meets the rules, clean the system first and fit a filter and new controls with the boiler.
Split-level terraces on the hills
Some terraces in Stoke and Mutley climb such steep streets that the back of the house sits a storey lower than the front. The old boiler is often in a lower-ground kitchen, and the flue options at the back are completely different from the front. We plan the route from both sides before quoting.
Thick stone walls near the waterfront
Older buildings around Stonehouse and the Barbican are often built of the grey local limestone, with walls far thicker than modern brick. Cutting a new flue hole through that takes proper core-drilling kit, and we seal the opening carefully afterwards so damp can't track through to the inside wall.

Things to sort before installation day
Much of the inner city runs controlled parking zones. If your street is one of them, a visitor permit for the engineer's van is the simplest fix. The council's own guidance is that a permit doesn't guarantee a space, so tell us about any nearby off-street spot as well.
Plan for a system clean. New boiler warranties usually expect the old water to be cleaned out and a filter fitted, and on radiators that have been in a Victorian terrace for decades the water can come out black. We tell you at the survey whether a power flush is needed or a chemical clean will do.
For the survey itself, clear access to the gas meter and the loft, know roughly how old the current boiler is and tell us if you let the property, so the paperwork you need as a landlord comes with the job. If the house has had an extension or new windows since the last boiler went in, mention that too, as it affects sizing.
Why choose Wisp for boiler installation in Plymouth
Back boilers in post-war houses
Boilers behind the gas fire still turn up in 1950s houses in Efford, Ham and Honicknowle. Our back boiler replacement service takes them out and frees the fireplace.
Victorian terraces
Terraces in Mutley, Lipson and Stoke often have a tank in the loft and a cylinder upstairs. A combi boiler installation clears both and gives you the cupboard back.
Waterfront flats
Flats around Millbay and Sutton Harbour often come with strict rules on where a flue can go. We check the lease and the building rules during the survey.
Price fixed after survey
The quote is fixed once we've seen the house. Finance is available on new boilers too.

Can you move the boiler out of the kitchen in a 1950s house?
Yes, and in plenty of post-war houses it's worth doing. Moving it to a cupboard or the loft frees wall space, though it adds pipework and a new flue position. We price it at the survey, and our page on boiler relocation explains what's involved.
My flat is in a block on the Hoe. Do I need permission for a new flue?
You'll normally need agreement from the freeholder or management company. In a conservation area, a new flue on the front can need planning consent as well. Keeping the old flue route is usually simplest, and we'll check what's possible before you spend a penny.
What size of new boiler does a three-bed terrace need?
It depends on heat loss, not bedrooms. A well-insulated mid-terrace in Lipson might need far less than an exposed end-terrace up the hill in Stoke. We work it out room by room at the survey, so you don't pay for an oversized new boiler.
We're in a 1950s house in Efford. Can the boiler go in the airing cupboard?
Usually. When an old tank system comes out, the upstairs airing cupboard is often the neatest home for a combi. The flue needs a route through an outside wall or the roof, and the condensate needs a drain, which in many post-war houses means a short run across to the bathroom waste.
How do I get the freeholder's permission for a new flue?
Write to the freeholder or management company with the details from our survey: the boiler model, where the flue will end and a photo of the wall. Most want to see that the terminal clears windows and vents by the distances the regulations set. Ask early, as replies can take a few weeks.
