Boiler cover means different things depending on who sells it. Some plans are just an annual service paid monthly. Others add breakdown repairs, parts and the wider heating system. We offer annual service plans, and new boilers we fit can come with extended manufacturer warranties. What a boiler plan typically includes
Across the industry, plans tend to be built from the same blocks. The more blocks you add, the more you pay each month.
- Annual boiler service by a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Breakdown call-outs and labour for repairs to the boiler
- Parts, sometimes with a cap on what is covered
- The wider heating system: pump, valves, radiators and controls
- Plumbing, drains or home electrics as optional extras on some plans
Service plan or full cover?
If your boiler is new and still under warranty, the manufacturer already covers most faults. What you need is the annual service to keep that warranty valid. A simple service plan, or just booking a boiler service each year, is usually enough.
Fuller cover makes more sense for older boilers out of warranty, where a repair bill could arrive at a bad time. Which? found the average annual cover package costs £183, and points out the monthly payments can add up to more than paying for servicing and the odd repair yourself. Worth doing the sums before you sign up to anything, ours included.
Extended manufacturer warranties
When we fit a new boiler as a manufacturer-approved installer, extended warranties are available. Length and terms vary by brand and model, so we confirm the exact warranty in writing with your quote.
The warranty normally depends on the boiler being serviced every year and the system being kept clean, which is why we fit a magnetic filter with every new boiler. Keep your service records somewhere safe.
Questions to ask any cover provider
Read the small print on any plan before you sign, whoever it is from. These are the questions that matter:
- Is there an excess per call-out?
- Is there an age limit on the boiler, or a cap on parts?
- Are existing faults excluded, and is there a waiting period at the start?
- Does it cover the radiators and controls, or the boiler only?
- What happens if the boiler is judged beyond economical repair?

Is boiler cover worth it?
It depends on the boiler. With a new boiler under manufacturer warranty, a yearly service is often all you need. With an older boiler out of warranty, cover can take the sting out of a big repair. Which? points out that monthly payments can add up to more than paying for a service and repairs as you need them.
What does a manufacturer warranty cover?
Usually faults with the boiler itself, parts and labour, for a set number of years. It normally requires annual servicing by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Exact terms depend on the brand and model, and we confirm them with your quote.
Does boiler cover include a gas safety certificate for landlords?
Not always. Some plans include one, many do not. If you are a landlord, check, or book a landlord gas safety certificate separately.
Can I get cover on an old boiler?
Many providers set age limits or ask for an inspection first. If your boiler is very old, put the monthly cost of cover against what a new boiler with a warranty would cost.
