Boiler Installation Exeter
City terraces, Topsham's quayside and the estates in between
We fit new gas boilers across Exeter, Topsham included, for homeowners and landlords. Each job starts with a survey, then a fixed quote with nothing tucked away in the small print. Our Gas Safe engineers take out the old boiler, fit the new one and register it in your name.

Boiler installation in Exeter
Boiler installation in Exeter covers the whole city, from the Victorian terraces off Heavitree Road and Magdalen Road to the bigger houses up Pennsylvania Road. If you live in St Leonard's or near the Cathedral Green, there's a good chance your home sits in a conservation area, where a new flue on the front can need more thought. We read the city council's guidance on altering a building in a conservation area before suggesting a position and look for a rear or roof route first. Down by the Quay, many of the converted warehouses and newer flats have the boiler in a tight cupboard, so a compact combi with a vertical flue is often the neatest answer. In the larger family homes, those with two bathrooms tend to suit a system boiler and cylinder instead.
We handle boiler replacement across the city and out to Pinhoe, Alphington, Countess Wear and Exwick.
Local homes, local know-how
Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Heavitree, Newtown and Mount Pleasant, Regency villas in St Leonard's, a centre partly rebuilt after the 1942 bombing, streets of student lets near the university, and Topsham's old estuary houses. Mains gas throughout.

The installations we do most across the city
System boilers for big Edwardian semis
Larger Edwardian semis in Pennsylvania and Mount Pleasant often have five bedrooms, a loft room and radiators nobody has balanced in years. A system boiler with an unvented cylinder suits them well. We usually add a magnetic filter and balance the radiators, so the top floor warms up as quickly as the ground.
Flues in narrow terrace side returns
In Heavitree and St Thomas terraces the boiler usually lives in the narrow back addition, with the flue facing the side return and a neighbour's window a couple of metres away. A plume management kit lets us steer the flue gases up and away from that window, which often saves moving the boiler at all.
Quayside houses inside the flood warning area
The Strand and Ferry Road in Topsham sit inside an Environment Agency tidal flood warning area. On these houses we put the new boiler, its controls and the wiring above floor level, often upstairs, and plan the pipework so that water on the ground floor doesn't mean paying for another boiler.

What to plan before an installation day
Many terraced streets sit inside residents' parking zones run by Devon County Council, and an engineer's van needs a trade permit to park there during restricted hours. Tell us at booking if your road is in a zone, and whether you have a drive or a spare visitor permit, so we can plan where to unload.
If your house is listed and the flue has to move, listed building consent comes from the city council. The statutory target for a decision is eight weeks from a valid application, so plan the installation around that rather than booking it for the week after you accept our quote.
For the survey, clear a path to the boiler, the gas meter and the loft hatch, and find the last service record. Near the river in St Thomas or Exwick, tell us if surface water has ever come in; the Environment Agency says that risk remains even with the newer river defences. Our page on new boiler cost explains what moves the price.
Why choose Wisp for boiler installation in Exeter
Tanks out of Victorian terraces
Terraces in Heavitree, Newtown and Mount Pleasant often still have a tank in the loft. A combi conversion clears it and gives you mains-pressure hot water.
Back boilers in mid-century homes
Boilers hidden behind gas fires still turn up in 1950s and 60s houses around the city. We remove them and fit a wall-hung boiler in a better spot.
Student houses
If you let to students in St James or Pennsylvania, a combi boiler installation has to cope with five showers before nine o'clock. Sometimes a system boiler and cylinder is the smarter choice.
Fixed quote, finance if you want it
The quote is fixed after the survey. Finance is available on new boilers if you'd rather spread the cost.

Boiler repair ExeterBoiler Installation Exeter FAQs
I live in Topsham. Will a new flue need planning permission?
Not always. A swap that reuses the existing flue position rarely needs anything. A new flue on a street-facing wall, especially on a listed building, is where consent can come in. We'll check your address and find a route that avoids the issue if there is one.
Can you fit a new boiler in a city centre flat?
Yes. Most flats have a combi in a kitchen cupboard with a flue through an outside wall or up through the roof. We check flue clearances and the size of the gas supply pipe before quoting, because both can limit which new boiler will fit.
Our St Leonard's house has a cellar. Can the boiler go down there?
Often, as long as there's a workable flue route and the cellar stays dry. It keeps the boiler out of the living rooms, which owners of period houses tend to like. We check the flue options and any signs of damp before we recommend it.
We've added a loft conversion. Does that change which boiler we need?
Often it does. An extra bedroom and shower on the top floor of a terrace adds heat loss and hot water demand, and a combi that coped before may struggle to push hot water two floors up. We recalculate for the whole house, new room included, and may suggest a system boiler or a higher-output combi.
Should we consider a heat pump instead of a new gas boiler?
For a well-insulated house with space outside for the unit, it is worth a look. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme currently offers £7,500 towards an air source heat pump. Tight city-centre terraces are harder, and listed houses need extra checks. We will tell you honestly which suits your home, and our page on air source heat pump installation has more.
