Oil boiler installation in Devon
Oil boiler installation in Devon takes us down lanes all over the county, from farms off the A377 near Crediton to cottages on the edge of Dartmoor. Hardly a rural property here is far from running water, and building regulations say a tank within 10m of inland water, including ditches and land drains that feed streams, needs a bund to catch any leak. If a spill reaches a watercourse on your land, the riparian owner responsibilities guidance explains what you're responsible for. So if you're on a smallholding near Tiverton or out towards Bideford, we look at the tank before the boiler: its condition, its distance from water, and whether a bunded replacement makes sense.
We fit and service oil boilers from Hartland and Holsworthy across to the Blackdown Hills, and down through the South Hams.

Oil heating work we take on most often
Boilers in outbuildings
On farms and larger plots, the boiler often sits in a separate boiler house or barn. We replace it there, check the insulated pipes that run underground to the house, and fit controls in the house so you don't need to walk across the yard to change the settings.
Flues in cob cottages
Cob walls don't take kindly to big new holes. When a condensing boiler replaces an old conventional-flue one, we look at lining the chimney, using a vertical flue or finding the shortest route through the wall. We keep cutting to a minimum and seal it with breathable materials.
Moving tanks on tight plots
In villages with small gardens, the old tank often sits too close to the house or the boundary. We move it to a safer spot, or fit a fire-protected tank or fire wall where space is tight. It keeps you within the rules and makes deliveries easier.
Winter deliveries and access on country lanes
Order oil before the first cold snap. Demand rises in winter, and narrow lanes on the moors can be awkward or impossible for a tanker after snow. Keep the route to the tank clear and trim hedges so they stay at least 600mm from the tank. Note where the tanker usually parks and how far the hose has to run.
When we replace the boiler, we'll check the tank gauge, the filter and the oil line. If water has got into the tank, we'll drain it off, as it causes sludge and blocked filters. A tank that's cracked, bulging or very old is best replaced before the new boiler goes in.
Spreading the cost of a new boiler can make sense if the old one fails without warning. Our page on boiler finance explains the options. If a Rayburn or Aga shares the same tank, we'll check its supply too, since both rely on the same line and filter.
Why choose Wisp for oil boiler installation in Devon
Keep tanks clear of thatch
A tank closer than 1.8m to a building needs fire-resisting walls and eaves around it. A thatched roof can't give that, so on cob-and-thatch cottages we site the tank well away.
Modern condensing boilers
Replacing a tired floor-stander with a condensing model makes better use of every delivery. Kitchen, utility or an external unit: we'll recommend what fits.
Service every year
Our oil boiler servicing covers the burner, nozzle, filter, fire valve and a look at the tank.
Heat pump option priced too
Homes heated by oil with no mains gas can get £9,000 towards a heat pump until March 2027. If it could suit your house, we'll quote both.

Oil Boiler Installation Devon FAQs
How long does an oil boiler replacement take?
A straight like-for-like swap is the quickest job. Moving the boiler, changing the flue or replacing the tank adds time. We'll give you a realistic timeframe with the fixed quote, not a best-case guess.
My tank is near a stream. Do I have to move it?
Not necessarily, but if it's within 10m of a stream, ditch or drain and isn't bunded, a bunded replacement is the right move. We'll look at the site and give you options. Our oil tank installation page explains the rules.
Can a Rayburn and an oil boiler work together?
Often, yes. Plenty of farmhouses have a heating Rayburn in the kitchen and a separate boiler, and the two can be linked. We service both: see range cooker servicing.
Is oil still worth it?
For some homes, yes. For others, a heat pump now stacks up better. It depends on the house, the radiators and what you want to spend upfront. Our heat pump installation team can price the alternative alongside.
Can my new oil boiler go in an outbuilding away from the house?
Yes, and many farms already do this. We'll check the underground pipes to the house are well insulated and in good condition, and fit frost protection in the outbuilding. The controls go inside the house, so you can change the heating without going outside.
