Boiler installation in Dartmouth

Boiler installation in Dartmouth starts with walking the route from the road to your boiler cupboard. Plenty of homes up the steps above Victoria Road can only be reached on foot, so the old boiler, cylinder and pipework all go out by hand. Along the Embankment and around the Boatfloat, parking for a working van is tight, so we agree timings and a loading spot before fitting day. If your house faces the river, we try to keep the flue off the front and favour a rear wall or roof terminal. Further up the hill towards Britannia Royal Naval College, or on the roads leading down to the Higher Ferry, access is often easier for a straight swap. The conservation area appraisal and management plan sets out what the council expects for kit on buildings in the protected area.

We fit new boilers from Southtown and Warfleet up to Townstal, and across the river in Kingswear.

Homes we work on

Local homes, local know-how

Timber-framed and slate-hung houses climb the steep valley sides from the quay, with Victorian villas higher up and twentieth century estates at Townstal on the hilltop. The town is on mains gas, while some outlying hamlets rely on oil or LPG.

Not every home here is on mains gas. Our OFTEC registered technicians fit and service oil boilers and we install LPG boilers too.

Common jobs

Jobs we take on most on both banks

Roof flues on slate-hung houses

On timber-framed and slate-hung fronts, cutting a new flue hole is rarely simple, and planners care about anything facing the river. For a boiler on the top floor, a vertical flue up through the roof is often the tidier answer. We check roof access and the state of the slates at the survey.

Cylinders for tall townhouses

Narrow houses stacked over several floors put the top shower a long way above the boiler. We often fit a system boiler with an unvented cylinder so the pressure holds right up the house, and we plan the pipe runs up the stairwell to keep lifted floorboards to a minimum.

Oil and LPG beyond the town

Out in the lanes, some farms and hamlets have no gas main and run on oil or LPG. Our OFTEC registered engineers replace oil boilers and check the tank, and before you commit to another oil boiler we can talk through whether a heat pump or a hybrid would suit the house.

Before you book

Planning around the ferries, steps and Regatta week

Jobs in Kingswear usually mean a ferry crossing. The Lower Ferry is a floating platform pushed by a tug between the two town centres and runs every day except Christmas Day, while the Higher Ferry crosses further upriver. We pick the crossing that suits the delivery, so the new boiler is not stuck in a queue at the slipway.

Late August is the week to avoid. The Royal Regatta brings temporary traffic orders; in 2026 the order closed Market Street, Victoria Road and Duke Street to through traffic and parking for most of the week, and getting a van anywhere near the centre becomes very hard. Book the work for another week and we can plan the carry from the nearest legal stopping point.

If your house is listed, book the survey well ahead. An outside change such as a new flue may need listed building consent, and that takes time to come through. Our guide to heating a listed or period home explains what to expect before you apply.

Why Wisp

Why choose Wisp for boiler installation in Dartmouth

01

Listed homes

If your house is listed, outside changes such as a new flue may need consent. We check before quoting so the plan is realistic.

02

Moving the boiler

Tall, narrow houses often hide the boiler in a basement kitchen. Boiler relocation to an upper floor or loft is often possible.

03

Townstal family homes

Newer houses on the hill usually have room for a straight swap, and a combi often fits where the old boiler hung.

04

Clean systems

We flush the system and fit a magnetic filter so sludge from old pipework does not shorten the life of the new boiler.

Questions

Boiler Installation Dartmouth FAQs

Our house in Kingswear is only reached on foot. Can you still do the job?

Yes. Lots of homes on both banks have no road access, and we plan for it. We book extra hands for the carry, bring the boiler in packed down and take the old one away the same way. We price that in at survey stage, so it is not a surprise on the day.

Can you replace an old boiler that heats a hot water tank?

Yes. Some houses keep the cylinder, others switch to a combi. A combi conversion frees space but needs decent mains pressure, which we test at the survey.

Are finance options available on a new boiler?

Yes, finance options are available on new boilers. We talk you through them after the survey, once you have a fixed price, so you can compare monthly payments with paying in one go and choose what suits you.

Is it worth fitting a new boiler in a house we only use in summer?

If the old one is unreliable or parts are getting scarce, yes. A modern condensing boiler with app controls lets you keep the house just above freezing while you are away and warm it up before you arrive. A breakdown in an empty house can go unnoticed for weeks, which often costs more than the repair itself.

Will the new flue affect our neighbours?

Sometimes. On terraces packed tight together, a flue terminal has to sit a set distance from a neighbour's window, door or boundary. If the only workable route passes close to next door, we explain it at the survey, and it is worth a friendly word with your neighbour before fitting day.
