Air source heat pump installation in Somerset
Air source heat pump installation in Somerset covers homes from the edge of Taunton to the villages along the A303. Out on the Levels, below Glastonbury Tor and around Burrowbridge, water is the thing to plan around. An outdoor unit sitting in floodwater is a write-off, so we check the flood risk before choosing a spot, and you can look up your own address with the government's check your long term flood risk service before we visit. That might mean a raised stand or wall brackets, with the controls and isolators kept well above floor level. Up in the Quantocks, the issue flips: exposed sites need a position out of the worst of the wind.
We fit heat pumps from the Levels villages around Othery and Westonzoyland to Frome, Bruton and the Blackdown Hills.

The heat pump installs we do most
Village houses coming off oil
Stone houses in the villages round Somerton and Langport often run an oil boiler with a tank in the garden. We replace the boiler with a heat pump, upsize radiators where the heat loss figures call for it, fit a new cylinder and take the tank away once it's empty.
Hill farms on Exmoor and the Quantocks
Farmhouses on high ground face colder winters and stronger winds than homes on the Levels. We size the heat pump for the local design temperature, site the unit out of the wind and make sure defrost water drains away rather than icing a path.
Newer homes leaving gas behind
Well-insulated houses on newer estates around Taunton and Bridgwater are often easy to switch. They usually have modest heat loss and a combi in the kitchen. The main jobs are finding room for the cylinder and checking the radiators against the design.
Choosing where the outdoor unit and cylinder go
The outdoor unit needs air moving freely round it, so avoid tight corners and spots under low canopies. Keep it away from bedroom windows, yours and the neighbours', and on a firm base. In winter it defrosts and drips water, so the spot needs to drain without freezing across a path or patio.
Inside, a heat pump cylinder is usually taller than an old copper one. An airing cupboard, a utility room or a corner of a garage can all work. Water in much of the area is hard, so we may suggest a scale reducer on the cold feed to protect the cylinder and taps.
If you'd like to see how the cylinder side works before the survey, our page on hot water cylinder installation explains the options. Tell us about any plans for a garden room, extension or new patio, so the unit isn't in the way later.
Why choose Wisp for air source heat pump installation in Somerset
Plenty of homes are off grid
Government estimates for 2024 put nearly three in ten homes across the council area off the gas grid. If yours runs on oil or LPG, the grant is £9,000 until March 2027.
Stone villages, sensible siting
In conservation areas a unit can't face the road under permitted development. In places like Somerton or Castle Cary we look to the back or side of the house first.
A survey, not a guess
We measure every room and check each radiator, so a draughty farmhouse near Wiveliscombe and a new-build in Taunton each get the system they need.
One fixed price
You get the design, the price and the grant deduction on one quote before anything starts. No extras sprung on you halfway through.

Air Source Heat Pump Installation Somerset FAQs
My house flooded in 2014. Can I still have a heat pump?
Yes. We'd simply design for it: the outdoor unit raised clear of likely flood levels, electrics kept high and pipework protected. Tell us how high the water came last time, because that's more useful than any map.
Do I need planning permission?
On most houses, no, if it meets the permitted development rules and the noise calculation. Listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas rule out units facing the road. Our heat pump planning guide explains it in plain English.
Is the grant really taken off upfront?
Yes. We apply to Ofgem on your behalf and the grant is deducted from your price, shown on the quote and invoice. More on our Boiler Upgrade Scheme page.
What about a ground source heat pump on a farm?
If you have land and a big house to heat, it's worth a look. It costs more upfront but has no outdoor fan unit. See our ground source heat pump page.
Where does the water from the outdoor unit go in winter?
When the unit defrosts, it drips water from its base. We route it to a soakaway, a gully or gravel so it doesn't freeze on a path or patio. In very cold spots we may add a heated drain line. It's part of choosing where the unit goes.
