Air source heat pump installation in Cornwall

Air source heat pump installation in Cornwall covers the whole county, from the terraces of Truro to farmhouses up on Bodmin Moor. If your home is in the old mining country either side of the A30 around Camborne and Redruth, it's likely inside the World Heritage Site, and the World Heritage Site planning guidance explains how that is protected. There, permitted development doesn't cover an outdoor unit on a wall or roof facing the road, so we plan for the back yard or garden from the first visit. Up on the exposed north coast round Newquay, we look for a sheltered spot out of the salt wind. Inland around St Austell and the clay country, the position is usually more about noise and neighbours than weather.

We fit heat pumps right across the county, from the Lizard and the Roseland to Launceston and Bude.

Common jobs

The heat pump jobs we do most west of the Tamar

Oil out of granite farmhouses

The commonest job is a granite farmhouse or cottage coming off an old oil boiler. We fit the heat pump, a new cylinder and any larger radiators, then drain and take away the old tank if you no longer need it. That frees up the yard and ends the oil deliveries.

Bungalows with storage heaters

Many 1960s and 70s bungalows along the coast were built with electric storage heaters and no radiators. An air source heat pump with a new wet system is a bigger job, but it brings proper controls. Air-to-air units don't qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, so we design for radiators or underfloor.

Hot water done properly

Coming off an LPG combi or an old immersion means finding space for a heat pump cylinder. We size it to your household and set a weekly high-temperature cycle to keep the water safe. In a small cottage the cylinder often fits where an old airing cupboard or a box-room corner was.

Before you book

Getting ready for a heat pump survey

Dig out your last year of fuel bills or oil delivery notes. How many litres you burn, or how much electricity your storage heaters use, gives us a useful check against the heat loss figures. Note any rooms that are always cold, and any damp patches on thick stone walls. If you've added insulation or new windows recently, tell us, as an old EPC may not reflect it.

Think about where an outdoor unit could sit: a level spot with clear airflow, ideally out of the prevailing wind and away from bedroom windows next door. Inside, we need space for a cylinder and a little room for pumps and valves.

We handle the grant claim, the noise check and notifying the electricity network operator. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme page explains who can apply and how the grant appears on your quote.

Why Wisp

Why choose Wisp for air source heat pump installation in Cornwall

01

Granite takes proper sizing

A thick-walled granite cottage near Penzance loses heat very differently from a 1990s bungalow outside Bodmin. We measure every room rather than copying the old boiler's output.

02

£9,000 for oil and LPG homes

Until March 2027 the grant is £9,000 if your home runs on oil or LPG with no mains gas. Plenty of homes round here tick both boxes.

03

Second homes and lets count

You can claim the grant on a second home or a property you let, as long as you own it. We set the controls so the house ticks over sensibly when it's empty.

04

Radiators checked, not guessed

Heat pumps run cooler than oil boilers. We check each radiator against the heat loss figures and only change the ones that need it.

Questions

Air Source Heat Pump Installation Cornwall FAQs

How many homes round here have already switched?

Quite a few. Government Boiler Upgrade Scheme statistics show more than 3,400 heat pump grants paid in the council area between May 2022 and September 2026. So you won't be the first on your lane.

My cottage is in the World Heritage Site. Do I need planning permission?

Not always. The extra rule only bites on units facing the road or sitting nearer the road than the house. Put it round the back and it's usually permitted development. A listed building is different: you'll need permission wherever it goes.

Will salt air shorten the life of the outdoor unit?

It can if the unit faces straight into the weather off the sea. We pick sheltered positions, keep it off the ground and talk you through anti-corrosion options for coastal homes. A yearly heat pump service includes a proper clean of the coil.

Can I keep my oil boiler as a backup?

Not if you want the grant, because hybrid systems aren't eligible. If a heat pump and boiler together suits your house better, our hybrid heat pump page compares the costs honestly.

Can I have a heat pump if my bungalow only has storage heaters and no radiators?

Yes. We design a full wet heating system with radiators or underfloor heating, a cylinder for hot water and the outdoor unit. It's more work than swapping a boiler, and the fixed quote covers it all. The grant applies to the heat pump system, so it can make a big difference to the cost.
