Boiler Installation Wells

New boilers for cathedral-city houses and homes up on the Mendips

We install boilers in Wells, England's smallest city, and in the villages that climb up onto the Mendip Hills. Every job starts with a home survey covering your pipework, water flow and flue options, and ends with a fixed quote you approve before any work begins.

Boiler installation in Wells

Boiler installation in Wells ranges from flats above the shops on the High Street to family homes off Glastonbury Road. Around the Market Place, many buildings are listed, so we plan the flue through a rear wall or an existing chimney with a liner and raise any consent question on the survey, not halfway through the job. On Tor Street, beside the walls of the Bishop's Palace, parking is tight, so we agree where to unload before fitting day. If you are unsure whether your home is listed, start with the council's listed buildings information.

We fit a new boiler anywhere from Portway and Southover to Wookey Hole and Croscombe.

Homes we work on

Local homes, local know-how

Medieval, Georgian and Victorian stone houses around the cathedral, many of them listed, with twentieth century estates on the edges of the city. The city is on mains gas, while some homes in the Mendip villages above it run on oil or LPG.

Not every home here is on mains gas. Our OFTEC registered technicians fit and service oil boilers and we install LPG boilers too.

Common jobs

What we fit most in the city and on the hills

Flue liners in old chimneys

In listed and period houses near the centre, the neatest flue route is often an unused chimney. We fit a new boiler with a flexible liner run up the existing stack, so nothing new appears on the front elevation. We check the chimney's condition first, as old flues can be blocked, damaged or shared with a neighbour.

Oil and LPG swaps up on the Mendips

Farmhouses and cottages up on the plateau around Priddy are mostly off the gas grid. We replace worn oil boilers with modern condensing models, or fit LPG where there is no room for an oil tank, and we pick flue positions that cope with the wind that sweeps across the high ground.

Combi conversions on the edge-of-city estates

The twentieth century estates on the edge of the city have plenty of semis with a regular boiler and loft tanks. For a household with one bathroom, a combi conversion frees the airing cupboard and gives mains-pressure hot water. We test your water flow first to make sure a combi will actually perform.

Before you book

Timing an install in a listed house or a hill village

If your house is listed and the flue has to change, build listed building consent into the plan. Councils aim to decide applications within eight weeks, and the work cannot start until consent is granted. We raise it on the survey so it does not catch you out halfway through.

The market fills the Market Place every Wednesday and Saturday, and parking around the centre is tight on those days. If you live close by, we will try to book your install for another day, or tell you where the van will need to wait.

Up on the hills, winter weather can close the higher roads and make deliveries difficult. Lanes up to the plateau villages can be icy when the city below is clear. If your old boiler is struggling, plan the replacement for the autumn rather than waiting for the first hard frost. If you are choosing between oil and LPG, our LPG vs oil boiler guide compares running costs and practicalities.

Questions

Boiler Installation Wells FAQs

Can I swap my old regular boiler for a combi in a townhouse?

It depends on how many bathrooms you have and your mains water flow. A combi suits one bathroom well. For two or more, a system boiler with a cylinder usually gives better showers. We measure flow on the survey and recommend what fits, and our combi boiler installation page explains the trade-offs.

How much disruption is a boiler replacement in a listed house?

Usually less than people expect. A swap in the same place, using the same flue route, is often a one-day job. Where pipe runs change, we lift as few floorboards as possible, protect old floors and finishes throughout, and talk you through the plan before we start so nothing comes as a shock.

Do you cover villages up on the Mendips?

Yes. We cover Priddy, Easton, Wookey and the villages in between, for gas, oil and LPG systems. Homes high on the hills catch the weather, so flue terminals need careful positioning away from the prevailing wind to avoid lockouts. We plan that on the survey.

Can a new boiler use our old chimney instead of a new flue hole?

Often, yes. A modern condensing boiler can flue through a chimney with the right liner kit, which avoids cutting a new terminal into the wall. We check the chimney on the survey, as some are too narrow, damaged or shared. If it works, it is often the best option for a listed or period house.

Is a heat pump realistic for a stone farmhouse on the Mendips?

It can be, but the house needs to hold its heat well enough, and the radiators may need upgrading. Thick stone walls with no insulation make it harder. We can look at your home on the survey and give an honest view. Some people choose a hybrid system, which pairs a heat pump with a boiler for the coldest days.
