Boiler Installation Fowey

Careful work on steep streets, old walls and listed houses

We install boilers in Fowey and across the water in Polruan, for owners of listed townhouses, harbour cottages and newer family homes up the hill. A Gas Safe or OFTEC engineer surveys first, and we agree a fixed quote before a single pipe is cut.

Boiler installation in Fowey

Boiler installation in Fowey takes in the narrow streets of the old town and the houses strung along the Esplanade. If your home is on Fore Street or near the Town Quay, it may well be listed, and with a listed house consent can be needed for changes inside as well as out. Cornwall Council's advice for works to historic buildings explains when to talk to its conservation team. Around St Fimbarrus Church the lanes are tight, so we plan parking and deliveries well before fitting day. On the steep lanes above the Esplanade, a compact combi on an internal wall saves carrying a cylinder up the hill. We reuse existing flue openings wherever we can and keep visible pipework to a minimum.

We fit new boilers in Tywardreath, Par and Lostwithiel as well as over the water in Polruan.

Homes we work on

Local homes, local know-how

Stone and slate-hung houses stacked up steep lanes above the harbour, many listed and inside the conservation area, with Victorian villas along the Esplanade and newer homes on the higher ground at the edge of town. A mix of mains gas, oil, LPG and electric heating, street by street.

Not every home here is on mains gas. Our OFTEC registered technicians fit and service oil boilers and we install LPG boilers too.

Common jobs

The installations we do most on both sides of the river

Cottages in Polruan's steep lanes

Polruan's old village climbs from the quay up lanes and steps that a van can't get down. We drive round rather than ferry a boiler across, then carry it in by hand. A compact combi is often the best fit, as there's rarely space for a cylinder in a cottage that small.

Stored hot water for Esplanade period houses

The Victorian villas along the Esplanade are big houses with several bathrooms and long pipe runs. A system boiler with an unvented cylinder suits them better than a combi, as long as the mains pressure holds up, which we test on the hillside before recommending anything.

Family homes in Par and Tywardreath

The 20th-century estates in Par and Tywardreath are mostly mains gas homes with a combi or a regular boiler and airing cupboard. Many are ready for a replacement, and the straightforward layouts mean a like-for-like swap or a combi conversion is often all that's needed.

Before you book

Planning work around the harbour, the ferries and Regatta week

Vehicle access into the old town is limited and the streets are narrow, so everything gets planned at the survey: where we park, how materials reach the house and how the old boiler comes out. Regatta week in the third week of August brings big crowds, and the summer as a whole is busy, so late autumn to early spring is the easiest time for a fit.

The town and the river up towards St Winnow fall within the Cornwall National Landscape, and the old town is a conservation area. If your house is listed, ask the council about consent before you set a date, as it can't be rushed.

For the survey, it helps to know if your property has a redundant chimney we could use, where the gas meter sits and whether the house has a cellar or loft. Our guide on heating a listed or period home covers the questions a conservation officer tends to ask.

Why Wisp

Why choose Wisp for boiler installation in Fowey

01

Steep lanes, planned logistics

Many streets are too narrow for a van to stop outside. We plan parking, deliveries and carrying routes at the survey.

02

Thick, cold walls

Old stone walls stay cold and damp. We route condensate pipes inside where possible so they don't freeze or stain the masonry.

03

Oil and LPG up the valley

Some homes in Golant and out at Polkerris run on oil or LPG. We fit those alongside mains gas boilers.

04

Win back the kitchen

Modern boilers are far smaller than the floor-standing units in many cottages. A boiler relocation can free up a whole wall.

Questions

Boiler Installation Fowey FAQs

Do I need listed building consent to replace a boiler?

A like-for-like boiler replacement using the same flue position often doesn't, but anything that cuts a new hole in historic fabric or alters a listed interior might. Checking is the owner's responsibility. We'll give you the drawings and details a conservation officer will ask for.

My harbour cottage has a tiny kitchen. Where can a new boiler go?

Often in the loft, a cupboard under the stairs or even an outbuilding, as long as the flue can reach outside safely. A compact combi boiler installation saves the most space, because there's no cylinder to find room for.

Can you work on a holiday let between bookings?

Yes. Tell us the gaps in your booking calendar when you ask for a quote and we'll plan the fit around changeover days. For bigger jobs, the quiet winter months make life easier for everyone.

Our house is up a flight of steps with no road outside. Can you still fit a boiler?

Yes, and it's common here. Modern wall-hung boilers are light enough for two people to carry, and we bring materials in by hand. We plan the route at the survey, including where the old boiler and any scrap will come out, so the day runs smoothly and nothing blocks the lane.

Can we keep the copper cylinder in our Esplanade house when the boiler changes?

If it's sound and well insulated, often yes, and the new boiler can be a regular or system model that feeds it. If you'd like stronger showers, an unvented cylinder might be the better upgrade, but it depends on the mains pressure. We measure that on the survey and price both options.
