Boiler installation in St Ives

Boiler installation in St Ives covers the granite cottages down by Smeaton's Pier as much as the homes up Higher Stennack, past the Leach Pottery. If you're in one of the old streets off Fore Street, walls can be around half a metre of granite rubble, and in a listed building a new flue hole may need consent first. Cornwall Council's guide to listed buildings explains how to check. Near the Tate gallery above Porthmeor, space is usually the headache: no airing cupboard and a galley kitchen point to a compact combi on an internal wall. Parking is tight right across town, so for homes near the station above Porthminster we plan van access before fitting day.

We handle combi boiler installation and full boiler replacement in Carbis Bay, Lelant and Hayle as well.

Homes we work on

Local homes, local know-how

Granite fishermen's cottages and net lofts pack the narrow streets of Downalong, with Victorian terraces and guest houses higher up and bungalows and newer homes towards Carbis Bay and Lelant. Much of the town has mains gas, while moorland villages such as Zennor and Towednack rely on oil, LPG or electric heating.

Not every home here is on mains gas. Our OFTEC registered technicians fit and service oil boilers and we install LPG boilers too.

Common jobs

What we fit most from the harbour to the moor

Boilers for converted net lofts

Downalong has plenty of former net lofts and fish cellars converted into homes and lets. They tend to have small rooms, few outside walls and stairs that leave little space for a boiler. A compact combi with a roof flue or a short flue to a back wall is the usual answer.

Combi swaps around Carbis Bay

The bungalows and newer houses towards Carbis Bay and Lelant are mostly on mains gas with a combi already. The water supply round here is soft, so scale is less of a worry than in limestone areas, but we still fit a magnetic filter and flush the system before the new boiler goes on.

Oil boilers on the moorland edge

Homes out at Halsetown and Towednack sit high and exposed above the bay, and many run on oil. We replace old floor-standing oil boilers with condensing models, often external, and check that the tank is still reachable by the delivery lorry down a narrow lane.

Before you book

Timing a boiler fit in a busy harbour town

From July to early September the town fills up, the car parks are full by mid-morning and driving into Downalong is close to impossible. Book the fit between November and March if you can. It's quieter for us, and for a let it means no lost bookings.

Many cottages in the old town have no parking at all, so we may carry materials from a car park. Tell us at the survey if there's a back lane or a neighbour's drive we can use. For a second home or a let, a key safe and a contact on the day make the job far easier.

Older cottages sometimes have a gas meter in an odd spot, such as under the stairs or in a cellar, and the pipe from it may be too narrow for a modern combi. We check that on the survey. Our page on combi boiler installation explains how we size a combi for a small home.

Why Wisp

Why choose Wisp for boiler installation in St Ives

01

Main homes in newer streets

Since the 2016 neighbourhood plan, new open-market homes here must be someone's principal residence. That means year-round households, and boilers sized for daily family life.

02

Full-house hot water

Guest houses and big lets need hot water for every room in August. We look at cylinder size and recovery time, not just boiler output.

03

Clifftop exposure

Homes above Porthminster and Carbis Bay take salt-laden Atlantic wind. We pick sheltered flue positions and terminals suited to coastal exposure.

04

Moorland villages

Out at Zennor and Towednack, many homes run on oil or LPG. We also cover oil boiler installation in Cornwall.

Questions

Boiler Installation St Ives FAQs

Our cottage in Downalong has no room for a cylinder. Will a combi cope?

For one bathroom, yes, as long as the mains pressure and flow are decent, and in the old streets they vary a lot. We measure on the survey. If the flow is weak, there are compact stored-water options we can talk through.

We've bought a granite cottage that's sat empty for years. Where do we start?

With a survey of what's actually there. Long-empty cottages often have old storage heaters, a solid fuel stove or a tired system with corroded pipework. We check whether gas runs in the street, look at walls and windows, and quote either a full system or a new boiler, whichever fits.

Will a roof flue need scaffolding?

Sometimes. A two-storey cottage can often be done with roof ladders and a tower. A three-storey terrace on a steep lane may need scaffolding, plus a council licence if it stands on the pavement or road. Either way, it goes in the fixed quote.

Our net loft conversion has no suitable outside wall for a flue. What are the options?

A vertical flue through the roof is the most common answer, as long as there's a safe route and the terminal meets the clearance rules. In a listed building that may need consent. Where no flue route works, we'll talk about electric options, though they cost more to run.

Does the soft water round here mean I can skip a scale reducer?

Usually, yes. South West Water describes most of its supply as soft or moderately soft, which is good news for combis. We still fit a magnetic filter and use inhibitor in the heating water to keep it clean, since that protects the boiler whatever the water is like.
