Boiler Repair Plymouth
Straight answers when the heating stops
We repair gas boilers across Plymouth, whatever the make or age. Our engineer finds the fault, tells you what it is and agrees the cost before fitting anything. If a repair would be throwing good money after bad, we'll say so.

Boiler repair in Plymouth
Boiler repair in Plymouth can mean a lockout in a flat facing the Hoe one day and a failed pump in a semi off Tavistock Road the next. If you work shifts at Derriford Hospital, we'll agree a time that fits around you rather than leaving you waiting in. Homes near Marsh Mills roundabout and along Embankment Road often have older combis that pack up on a cold snap, usually because of a frozen condensate pipe or a worn part. If the cost of a breakdown is a worry this winter, the council's cost of living support is a good place to start. We give you a clear written diagnosis and price either way.
Our heating engineer covers Devonport, Stonehouse, Keyham, Crownhill, Estover and Plympton.
Homes and heating systems
Breakdown calls come from every era of housing: Victorian terraces with long pipe runs and old radiators, post-war houses on their second or third boiler, and newer homes in Plympton and Plymstock where the boiler is often in a cupboard or garage. Weather off the Sound also takes its toll on hillside flues.

Breakdowns we fix most often
Rain getting into exposed flues
On exposed hillside homes above the Sound, wind-driven rain can work its way into flue joints and terminals on older installations. That leads to lockouts and corrosion inside the boiler case. When we repair one of these, we check the flue seals and terminal too, not only the part that failed.
Worn parts on estate combis
Most combis on the big post-war estates are mid-range models that have done a lot of hours. Diverter valves and fans are the failures we see most. We check parts availability for your model before we come out, so the repair isn't held up waiting for a second visit.
Hidden leaks in converted flats
Pressure dropping in an upper-floor flat in a converted Victorian house can mean a leak under the floorboards, sometimes noticed first by the flat below. We pressure test the system section by section to find where it's losing water before lifting any boards, so the disruption stays small.

What helps when your heating fails
Tell us the boiler's make and model, the fault code on the display and whether you've lost heating, hot water or both. A photo of the data badge, usually under the front cover, does the job. In a flat, let us know which floor you're on and whether the building has a lift, because it matters when we carry parts and tools up.
If there's a smell of gas anywhere in the home, leave the boiler alone. Open the windows, turn off the gas at the meter if you can reach it safely and ring 0800 111 999. That emergency line is free. We come in for the repair once it's safe.
For an older boiler, think about how you want to handle the next breakdown before it happens. Some people keep money aside; others prefer a plan that spreads the cost, and our page on boiler cover explains how that works. If the boiler is well past its best, it may be worth pricing a replacement at the same time as the repair.
Why choose Wisp for boiler repair in Plymouth
Note the fault code
Jot down the code on the display before you call. It helps us narrow down the likely part before we arrive.
Pressure keeps dropping
Losing pressure every few days usually means a leak on the system or a failed expansion vessel. Topping up just hides it.
Frozen condensate
In a hard frost, a condensate pipe on an exposed wall can freeze and lock the boiler out. We can reroute or lag it.
Total breakdown
No heating or hot water at all? Our emergency boiler repair page covers the first checks.

My landlord hasn't fixed the boiler. Who do I contact?
Report it to your landlord or agent in writing first, because gas repairs are their job. If nothing happens, the council's private housing team can step in where a home lacks adequate heating. We attend rented homes when the landlord or agent books us.
What usually causes a boiler breakdown in winter?
Frozen condensate pipes, low pressure after the heating sat unused all summer, and pumps or valves that stick when they first work hard. Most of these are routine repairs once found. A service in late summer catches a fair few of them before the cold arrives.
Is it worth repairing a boiler that's over 15 years old?
Sometimes. A cheap part on a reliable old boiler is fine. A failed heat exchanger, or a third breakdown in a year, usually isn't, and the money is better put towards a replacement. We give you both figures so the decision is yours.
The flat downstairs says water is coming through. Could it be our heating?
It could. A leak on a heating pipe under the floor shows up as falling boiler pressure upstairs and a damp patch below. Turn the heating off, stop topping up the pressure and call us. We find and fix the leak. If you rent, tell your landlord straight away, since the repair is theirs to arrange.
Can you repair a boiler that's still under its manufacturer warranty?
Call the manufacturer first. Most send their own engineer for warranty faults, and an outside repair can affect your cover. Once the boiler is out of warranty, or the fault isn't covered, we take it on. Keep your service records handy either way, as the manufacturer will ask for them.
