Boiler repair in Newton Abbot

Boiler repair in Newton Abbot is needed after heavy rain as well as in cold snaps. The River Lemon runs through the middle of town, and during a wet spell you can watch the River Lemon level at Holbeam Dam on GOV.UK. If flood water ever reaches a boiler, cylinder or gas meter, do not switch anything back on until a Gas Safe engineer has checked it. Up around Bakers Park and out along Ashburton Road, the more usual winter call is a frozen condensate pipe or a boiler losing pressure. If you're out towards Bradley Manor on Totnes Road, tell us where the boiler and flue sit when you call, so we arrive with the right parts. We can test what survived a flood and give you a written report for your insurer.

We fix boiler breakdowns in Wolborough, Decoy and Milber, and out to Ogwell and Ipplepen.

Homes we work on

Homes and heating systems

Repairs here are mostly on gas combis in semis and terraces, and on system or regular boilers in the larger period houses, where long pipe runs and old radiators send sludge back to the boiler. Older homes also have more gas fires and back boilers with faults of their own, and some still have loft tanks that can freeze in a hard frost.

Common jobs

Faults we fix most often here

Cold rooms upstairs in big period houses

In tall period houses with long pipe runs, upstairs radiators that stay cold often point to a struggling pump, air trapped high in the system or a stuck zone valve. We find which it is before suggesting any new parts, and bleed and balance the system once the fault is fixed.

Combi faults on the estates

The commonest calls from semis are combis that lose pressure, will not fire or give lukewarm hot water. We check the expansion vessel, the ignition and the diverter valve, then fit the failed part once you have agreed the price.

Faults after wild weather

Driving rain and strong wind can push water into a flue or a boiler's air intake, especially on the higher, more exposed roads towards Highweek and Knowles Hill. We check the flue seals and terminal and test anything that got wet before the boiler goes back into use.

Before you book

Before you call us out

Run through the simple checks: is there power to the boiler, is the gas on at the meter, is the pressure gauge in the green, and is the thermostat actually asking for heat? Now and then a breakdown turns out to be a flat thermostat battery or a timer that has been knocked off.

Parking around the town centre and the older period house streets can be tight. Let us know if there is a drive, a permit zone or a car park nearby, and if your boiler is in the loft, make sure the hatch and ladder are clear before we arrive. A quick list of which radiators are not working lets the engineer go straight to the problem.

Write down the boiler make, model and any fault code, and how long the problem has been going on. If sludge keeps killing pumps and valves in your system, a power flush after the repair may stop the same parts failing again.

Questions

Boiler Repair Newton Abbot FAQs

My boiler is leaking water underneath. What should I do?

Turn it off at the switch, put a tray under the drip and check the pressure gauge. Leaks often come from a failed pressure relief valve, a pump seal or corroded pipework. A heating engineer should look at it soon, because water near a boiler's electrics is a risk.

Is a boiler breakdown in winter an emergency?

If someone vulnerable is at home without heat, we treat it as urgent. Our emergency boiler repair page explains what to check first. If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999 straight away.

Can you fix a boiler my landlord has not repaired?

Your landlord is responsible for gas repairs in a rented home, so contact them first. If they ask us to attend, we will arrange a time with you directly.

Why does my boiler lose pressure only when the heating is on?

That usually points to the expansion vessel or the pressure relief valve. Water expands as it heats, and if the vessel has lost its charge, the pressure climbs until the relief valve dumps water outside. Then the pressure falls as the system cools. Look for a dripping copper pipe on an outside wall.

My hot water works but the radiators will not come on. What is wrong?

On a combi, that often means a diverter valve stuck in the hot water position, or a thermostat or timer that is not calling for heat. On a system or regular boiler, a stuck motorised zone valve is a common cause. We test the controls and valves to find which part has failed.
