Breakdowns sorted on both sides of the river

Boiler repair in Barnstaple
Boiler repair in Barnstaple might mean a no-heat call in a terrace near the station or a leaking boiler in a new-build out past Roundswell retail park. If you live on the low ground by Rolle Quay or close to the Tarka Trail along the river, it's worth knowing what to do if water ever reaches your boiler or gas meter: don't try to restart it, turn off the gas and electrics and have a Gas Safe engineer test it first. The council's flood defence report sets out where the town's flood defences run. If your boiler does need replacing after a flood, we'd mount the new one higher up, well clear of the floor. Most breakdowns are far simpler than that, mind, and we'll tell you straight.
Our heating engineer covers Pilton, Pottington, Newport, Sticklepath, Bickington and Landkey.
Homes and heating systems
Repairs split between the town's gas combis and regular boilers and the oil and LPG boilers that heat many village homes and farms. Oil boilers bring their own faults, from fuel lines to burners, and older homes out in the parishes often still run a regular boiler with a cylinder and a header tank.
Not every home here is on mains gas. Our OFTEC registered technicians fit and service oil boilers and we install LPG boilers too.

Breakdowns we are called to most
Oil burner lockouts
An oil boiler that locks out often comes down to a blocked filter, a worn nozzle, water in the tank or a failed photocell. We check the fuel supply all the way back to the tank before we condemn any part, because the tank is where a lot of village breakdowns actually start.
LPG boilers that won't light
On LPG, a boiler that won't fire can be a regulator problem or a tank running low rather than a fault in the boiler. We check the gas pressure at the boiler first. If the problem is on the tank side, we tell you so your supplier can deal with their part of the system.
Lukewarm hot water from terrace combis
In the terraces of Newport and Sticklepath, a combi that gives heating but only lukewarm hot water usually has a scaled plate heat exchanger or a sticking diverter valve. Both are repairable. We test which one it is before ordering parts, so you are not paying for a guess.

When the heating goes off: what to check and tell us
On oil, check the tank level with a dipstick if the gauge is unreliable, and see whether the fire valve on the supply line has tripped. If you've just had a delivery, the boiler may have drawn up sediment stirred up in the tank, so tell us when the tanker came. Note whether the lockout light is on and how many times anyone has pressed reset, because repeated resets can flood the combustion chamber with oil.
If you smell gas in a flat over a shop, warn the shop below as well, leave the building and ring 0800 111 999 from outside. Gas can travel between floors in old mixed buildings, so nobody should be switching lights or appliances on or off until the emergency engineer has been.
For rural addresses, give us clear directions and mention any gated or steep lane. If your tank itself is cracked, weeping or rusting, our page on oil tank installation explains replacement.
Why choose Wisp for boiler repair in Barnstaple
No heating, hot water fine
On a system boiler this is often a thermostat, programmer or motorised valve. We test each in turn rather than guessing.
Frozen condensate pipes
A condensate pipe running outside can freeze in a cold spell. Pour warm water over it and reset the boiler; call us if it won't come back.
Drips and leaks
Water dripping from the boiler or pipework should be looked at quickly, especially near the electrics.
Nothing working
For a complete breakdown, our emergency boiler repair page covers what to check before you ring.

Can you repair an oil boiler as well?
Yes. Lots of village homes run on oil, and our OFTEC registered engineers repair those too. Same approach as gas: diagnose, price, then fix with your agreement. When you call, tell us if the burner's lockout light is on and when you last checked the tank level.
What usually causes a boiler breakdown in a cold snap?
Frozen condensate pipes and low pressure are the two classics. Both are often quick to put right once diagnosed. Pressure that keeps dropping, though, points to a leak we'll need to track down, somewhere on the boiler, the pipework or a radiator valve.
The boiler in our flat above a shop has stopped. Who's responsible?
If you rent, your landlord. If you own the flat, it's yours, even when the flue runs through the shop below. We check the whole flue route as part of the repair, because in mixed buildings a fault can affect more than one property.
Water has got into our oil tank. Will the boiler still run?
It might for a while, then cut out once water reaches the burner. Water gets in through a damaged lid or builds up from condensation over the years. We can drain the water off, change the filter and check the burner, and if the tank is cracked or rusting, we quote for replacing it.
Can you look at a range cooker that heats our hot water?
Our engineers service oil-fired Aga, Rayburn and similar range cookers. If yours heats the hot water or radiators as well as the ovens, say so when you book, because a fault on the boiler side of a range may need different parts and checks from a cooking fault.
