Boiler repair in Exmouth

Boiler repair in Exmouth often starts with a phone call on the first cold night of autumn, when a boiler that sat idle all summer refuses to fire. If you're in one of the flats on the Esplanade near the Pavilion, salt air and condensate pipes that freeze in an east wind are common reasons for a lockout. Homes off Imperial Road and out along Hulham Road see their share of pressure loss and failed pumps too. Wherever you are near the seafront, it's worth knowing what to do if water ever reaches the boiler or meter: switch off the gas and electrics and follow the district council's advice for when you've been flooded before anyone turns it back on. Once it's safe, we strip and test it and tell you straight whether a repair makes sense.

Our heating engineer visits cover Littleham, Brixington and Withycombe Raleigh, and out to Lympstone and Woodbury.

Homes we work on

Homes and heating systems

Breakdowns here often trace back to the building rather than the boiler. Flats in Georgian houses can have long, narrow gas runs, bungalows have exposed condensate pipes, and seafront homes see corroded terminals. On the Brixington estates, the usual suspects are pumps, diverter valves and pressure vessels in fairly modern combis.

Common jobs

Breakdowns we are called to most

Salt-worn terminals on the front

On houses facing the sea, salt gets into the flue terminal and air intake and slowly corrodes them. Over time that shows up as flame failures or fan faults. We clean or replace the terminal, check the flue seals and tell you if the flue would be better moved to a more sheltered wall.

Combis starved of gas in top-floor flats

In converted buildings, a top-floor combi can lock out when a hot tap runs hard because the gas pipe feeding it is too narrow. We test the working pressure at the boiler under full load. Quite often the answer is a bigger gas pipe rather than a faulty boiler, which is a cheaper fix.

Old back boilers that won't stay lit

Back boilers behind gas fires in older semis around Withycombe Raleigh can still be repaired when parts exist. A worn thermocouple or pilot assembly is the usual culprit. We fix it where it makes sense, and tell you honestly when the boiler has reached the point where replacing it is better value.

Before you book

Before you ring about a breakdown

Check the basics first. Is the gas on at the meter, does the hob light, is there power to the boiler and what does the pressure gauge say? Note any fault code on the display. In a flat, find out whether the building has a shared meter room and who holds the key, because we may need it.

If you smell gas, leave the boiler alone, open the windows, turn the supply off at the meter if it is safe and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, free, at any hour. Once the supply has been made safe, call us for the repair. Our guide on what to do if you smell gas goes through it step by step.

Have the boiler's make, model and rough age ready. Some parts for older models have to be ordered in, and knowing the model lets us check availability before we arrive.

Why Wisp

Why choose Wisp for boiler repair in Exmouth

01

Frozen condensate pipes

A condensate pipe on an exposed outside wall can freeze in a cold snap and shut the boiler down. We can reroute or insulate it so it stops happening.

02

Pressure that won't hold

Pressure that keeps falling usually means a leak or a tired expansion vessel. Topping it up every week only hides the fault.

03

Older boilers

Some parts for older models get hard to find. We'll tell you honestly if a repair is good value or money down the drain.

04

No heat at all

Questions

Boiler Repair Exmouth FAQs

The boiler showed a fault code after a frosty night. Is it frozen?

Quite possibly, if it's a condensing boiler with the condensate pipe running outside. Pouring warm (not boiling) water along the outside pipe often clears it, and the boiler resets. If it doesn't, or the code is a different one, book a visit and we'll find the real cause.

What does a boiler breakdown visit cost?

It depends on the fault, so we won't throw out a number over the phone that might change. The engineer diagnoses the boiler, then prices the repair before doing anything. You decide whether to go ahead.

Should we repair or replace a boiler that keeps failing?

Look at its age and history. A boiler under ten years old with one fault is usually worth fixing. An older one that needs a big part like a heat exchanger, and has broken down before, is often better replaced. We'll put both prices in front of you.

Our boiler cuts out on windy nights. Why?

Most often it's the flue terminal. On exposed walls facing the sea, strong gusts can push flue gases back towards the air intake or blow the flame out, and the boiler locks out to protect itself. A terminal guard or wind kit sometimes cures it; occasionally the flue needs moving. We rule out a fan or sensor fault first.

Our seafront holiday flat has guests in and the boiler has stopped. Can you still come?

Yes, if the owner or manager books us and the guests know we are coming. We diagnose the fault, give the owner the price and fix it once they agree. If the boiler can't be made safe, we turn it off, label it as unsafe and tell the owner straight away, so they can look after the guests.
