Boiler Repair Portishead
Fault finding and fixes when the heating lets you down
When a boiler fails in Portishead, you want someone who finds the fault first and quotes second. Our Gas Safe engineers repair combi, system and regular boilers in flats, family homes and older period houses, and you agree a fixed price before any parts go in.

Boiler repair in Portishead
Boiler repair in Portishead covers every street, from the homes around Gordano School on St Mary's Road to the flats overlooking the marina. We cover the newer estates off the A369 too, on the stretch towards junction 19 of the M5. Out on the exposed side near the Black Nore lighthouse, a hard frost or a cold easterly can freeze the plastic condensate pipe on an outside wall and lock the boiler out. Warm (never boiling) water over the pipe and a reset sometimes fixes it, and if not, give us a call. If paying for heating is the bigger worry, North Somerset Council's page on heating the home you live in points to help with bills and loans for essential repairs.
We send a heating engineer to boiler breakdown calls in Pill, Portbury and Weston-in-Gordano as well as every corner of town.
Homes and heating systems
Breakdowns here split between first-generation combis in flats on the old dock land, which are reaching the age where fans and boards fail, and regular boilers with cylinders in the older houses, where pumps, valves and loft tanks cause their own faults. Hard water adds scale-related hot water faults to both.

The breakdowns we get called to most
No hot water from a combi
Scale from the hard local water clogs the plate heat exchanger and the hot water sensor, so the tap runs warm then cold. We confirm it with a test, then replace or clean the part, and we'll suggest a scale reducer so the same fault doesn't come back next winter.
Ageing fans and circuit boards
Boilers fitted when the first marina blocks went up are now old enough for fans, ignition leads and printed circuit boards to wear out. We check whether parts are still made before quoting, so you don't pay for a repair on a model with no spares left.
Pumps and valves in older systems
In the period houses and 1970s houses with a cylinder, many breakdowns aren't in the boiler at all. A seized pump or a motorised valve stuck halfway stops the heating or the hot water. Those are quick swaps once we've found which one has failed.

What to check before you call us out
A few faults have simple causes. Check the pressure gauge on the boiler: on most sealed systems it should read somewhere around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, and the manual explains how to top it up. Make sure the thermostat is calling for heat and the timer hasn't reset after a power cut.
If the boiler shows a fault code, write it down along with what happened just before it stopped. In a flat, ask the neighbours if they have a problem too, as a fault on a shared supply needs a different call. And if you're a tenant, contact your landlord or agent before booking, since they normally arrange and pay for gas repairs.
Never take the boiler case off yourself. If it's leaking water onto electrics, switch it off at the fused spur and turn off the water. Our emergency boiler repair page covers the steps for an urgent breakdown.

Boiler installation PortisheadBoiler Repair Portishead FAQs
The boiler in our Redcliffe Bay house keeps losing pressure. What's going on?
Usually a slow leak: a weeping radiator valve, a tired expansion vessel or a pressure relief valve that's letting by. Topping up buys you heat for a while, but if you're doing it every week, something needs fixing. We trace the cause and quote before replacing anything.
Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old boiler, or should I replace it?
Depends on the fault. A fan or diverter valve on an otherwise sound boiler is usually worth doing. A failed heat exchanger on an old model rarely is. We give you both prices and let you decide, with no sales push either way.
I rent my flat. Can I book you for a repair?
We can come out, but repairs to gas appliances are normally the landlord's responsibility, so speak to your landlord or letting agent first. If they want us to attend, we'll arrange access with you and send them the report and quote.
My combi gives hot water that keeps going hot and cold. Is it about to fail?
Not necessarily. Temperature swings at the tap are often scale on the plate heat exchanger or a dirty flow sensor, both common with hard water. Sometimes it's simply low water pressure into the property. We test the flow and the boiler's readings, then tell you which part is at fault and what it costs.
Our heating works but the hot water cylinder has gone cold. What is likely to be wrong?
On a system with a cylinder, the usual suspects are a motorised valve that has stuck, a faulty cylinder thermostat or a programmer that has lost its hot water setting. If the cylinder has an immersion heater, you can use that for now. We trace the fault and quote before fitting anything.
