Boiler repair in Poole

Boiler repair in Poole gets urgent fast in the low-lying streets behind Poole Quay, where a winter storm on a high tide can push water into garages and ground floor utility rooms. Homes on the Hamworthy side of the Twin Sails Bridge and close to Holes Bay sit low too. A boiler that has had water in it must stay off until a Gas Safe engineer has checked it, because water gets into controls, fans and gas valves and the damage is not always visible. You can look up your own address on the government's long-term flood risk checker to see how exposed your home is. If the boiler sits low down, it may be worth moving it upstairs when it is replaced. Up on higher ground off Ringwood Road, breakdowns are more about age, such as a worn pump or a failed diverter valve.

Our heating engineers cover breakdowns across the area, from Canford Heath and Broadstone to Branksome Park and Lilliput.

Homes we work on

Homes and heating systems

Condensing boilers became the norm for gas replacements from 2005, so many fitted in that first wave are now old enough for fans, pumps and circuit boards to fail. Period houses around Ashley Cross add older regular boilers on gravity-fed systems, where sludge in the feed and vent pipes causes overheating and loud kettling noises.

Common jobs

Breakdowns we fix most often round here

Combis with no hot water

In the terraces and flats around Parkstone and Oakdale, a lot of calls are combis that heat the radiators but run the taps cold, or the other way round. A sticking diverter valve or a scaled-up plate heat exchanger is the usual cause. We test both before ordering parts, so you are not paying for the wrong one.

Faults outside the boiler

Bigger houses in Branksome Park and Canford Cliffs have more pipework and controls to go wrong. A zone valve that sticks shut or an unvented cylinder valve dripping onto the floor can look like a boiler fault. We trace the problem through the whole system first, because the boiler itself is often working fine.

Boilers that sat idle all summer

Boilers in second homes on the peninsula can sit unused for weeks, then struggle when the owners arrive in autumn. Pumps seize and ignition electrodes corrode. We free or replace the pump, clean or swap the electrode and suggest running the heating briefly each month while the house is empty.

Before you book

What to check before you call us out

Start with the simple things. Check the pressure gauge reads roughly 1 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold, that the gas is on at the meter and that the boiler has power at the fused spur. If you are on a prepayment meter, check it has credit.

Note the make, the model and any fault code on the display. When you ring, tell us whether the heating, the hot water or both have stopped, because that alone narrows the fault down a lot.

Parking can slow a visit in the Old Town and around the quay, so let us know if there is a space on your drive or a visitor permit we can use. For holiday homes, leave a key with a neighbour so we are not waiting on the step. If you smell gas, read what to do if you smell gas and call the emergency number before anything else.

Questions

Boiler Repair Poole FAQs

The boiler in my Canford Heath house keeps losing pressure. What's causing it?

Usually a small leak somewhere on the system, a weeping radiator valve, or a pressure relief valve letting water out through the little pipe on the outside wall. Topping it up buys time but does not fix anything. We trace where the water is going and quote for the repair before doing it.

Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old boiler?

Sometimes. A cheap part on a boiler that has been serviced every year can give you several more winters. A failed heat exchanger on an old model rarely makes sense. We give you the repair price and, if you ask, what a replacement would involve, then leave the choice with you.

Should I turn the boiler off if it's leaking?

Yes. Switch it off at the fused spur and close the cold mains inlet if you can find it. Put a tray under the drip and keep electrics dry. A leak from inside the case usually points to a seal, pump or heat exchanger, and in homes near the water a corroded fitting is a common culprit.

Can you repair a boiler that's still under warranty?

If the boiler is within the manufacturer's warranty, ring the manufacturer first, because a repair by anyone else can void it. Plenty of newer homes in Canford Cliffs and on Sandbanks still have boilers in warranty, so this comes up a lot. If the warranty has run out, or the fault is in a valve or the cylinder rather than the boiler, we can help.

Why are the upstairs radiators cold in my Parkstone house?

In a tall Victorian or Edwardian house, cold upstairs radiators usually point to trapped air, a weak pump or sludge in an old gravity system. Bleed them first. If they stay cold, or the boiler bangs while it runs, the system probably needs a clean. We repair the fault and tell you honestly whether a flush would help.
