Boiler Repair Exeter
Heating off? Let's find out why
We repair gas boilers across Exeter and Topsham, whatever the make. Our engineer tracks down the fault, explains what's gone and agrees the price with you before a part goes in. If the boiler is past saving, you'll hear that honestly.

Boiler repair in Exeter
Boiler repair in Exeter means anything from a no-heat call in the streets around the RD&E on Barrack Road to a leaking boiler in a new-build near Sandy Park. If you're a shift worker at the hospital, we know a cold house after a night shift is miserable, so we'll agree a visit time that suits you. Off Rydon Lane and round Marsh Barton, a lot of the newer homes have combis that tend to fail on small parts such as a diverter valve or fan, which are usually quick fixes. If a repair isn't worth doing on an old boiler, check the council's energy grants page to see if your household could get help with a replacement.
Our heating engineer covers Exwick, St Thomas, Whipton, Pinhoe, Countess Wear and Topsham.
Homes and heating systems
The housing gives us a real mix of repair work: combis in flats and terraces, regular boilers with cylinders and loft tanks in the bigger Victorian houses, and the odd surviving back boiler in a 1950s home. Student houses see the heaviest use, so parts on those boilers tend to wear out sooner than in a family home.

Repairs we are called out for most
Frozen condensate in loft boilers
Boilers moved into terrace lofts during earlier conversions sometimes have condensate pipes running through a cold roof space. In a hard frost they can freeze inside the house, not only outside. We trace the whole run, lag it properly or reroute it to an internal waste so the same lockout doesn't come back every winter.
Open-flued boilers that keep cutting out
Older open-flued boilers in Topsham cottages and Victorian houses near the quay can spill fumes back into the room if the chimney or flue liner is partly blocked. When one of these keeps shutting down, we check the flue draws properly before touching any part, because the cut-out may be the safety device doing its job.
Boilers caught by surface water
The river defences have cut the risk of the Exe flooding much of St Thomas, but the Environment Agency is clear that surface water flooding remains a risk there. When water reaches a ground-floor boiler or meter box, we make the installation safe and test it fully before anything is switched back on.

Before you book a repair
Note what the boiler is doing: the fault code, whether you've lost heating, hot water or both, and the pressure reading. In a shared house, ask housemates whether anyone has been resetting or topping up the boiler, because repeated resets can hide the real fault and we need to know.
Breakdown visits to terraces inside a residents' parking zone go quicker if you can tell us where the engineer can stop. A drive, a visitor permit or the nearest pay and display all help. If you are a tenant, tell your landlord or agent at the same time, so they know the boiler is being looked at.
If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, or people in the house get headaches or dizziness that ease when they go outside, turn the boiler off, open the windows and call 0800 111 999 straight away. Don't wait for a repair appointment. Our guide on what to do if you smell gas covers the emergency steps.
Why choose Wisp for boiler repair in Exeter
Heating works, hot water doesn't
On a combi that's often the diverter valve or the plate heat exchanger. Both are usually repairable.
Leaks and lost pressure
Water under the boiler, or pressure that won't hold, needs a look soon. A small drip onto the electrics can turn into a much bigger repair.
Sludge in old systems
Older radiators in Heavitree and Newtown terraces can be thick with sludge that kills pumps. We'll say if power flushing would stop the repeat breakdowns.

I rent a student house and the boiler has broken. Can you come out?
Tell your landlord or agent first, because gas repairs are their responsibility and they may already have someone booked. If they ask us to attend, we'll diagnose the fault and send the report to them.
Is a boiler breakdown always expensive?
No. Plenty come down to a failed sensor, a sticking valve or a blocked condensate trap, which are fairly small jobs. The engineer diagnoses first and prices it, so you know where you stand before you say yes.
Can you repair the old boiler in our Topsham cottage?
If parts are still available for it, yes. For very old floor-standing or back boilers we'll give you the repair price and a replacement price side by side. Then it's your call, and we won't push you either way. Some of those old cast-iron boilers run for decades with a bit of care.
The boiler runs but some radiators stay cold. Is that a repair?
Often it's a system issue rather than a boiler fault. Trapped air, a seized valve or sludge settled in the bottom of the radiators are the common causes, and in tall terraces the top-floor rooms usually suffer first. We check the boiler is working properly, then tell you whether the system needs bleeding, balancing or a clean.
Do you repair boilers in the post-war flats in the centre?
Yes. Many flats in the rebuilt centre have a boiler in a kitchen cupboard with a flue through an outside wall. If your flue connects into a shared duct, we ask the managing agent for the building's records, because the fix may involve the flue as well as the boiler, and that part belongs to the block.
