Boiler installation in Barnstaple

Boiler installation in Barnstaple covers everything from the flats over the shops on Boutport Street to the homes across the Long Bridge. If you live above a shop near the Pannier Market or along Butchers Row, you're in the town centre conservation area, and a new terminal on the street front can need consent. We read the council's town centre conservation area appraisal before suggesting a flue position and look at rear walls or the roof first. Getting a new boiler up narrow stairs in these buildings takes some planning too, so we'll talk through access at the survey. Near Green Lanes, many of the upstairs flats run on a small combi in a kitchen cupboard, and swapping like for like is usually the simplest route.

We handle boiler replacement across the area, from Bickington and Fremington to Landkey and Bishop's Tawton.

Homes we work on

Local homes, local know-how

Listed buildings and flats over shops in the old centre, Victorian terraces in Pilton and Newport, and newer estates at Roundswell. The town itself is on mains gas, while many of the surrounding villages and farms rely on oil or LPG.

Not every home here is on mains gas. Our OFTEC registered technicians fit and service oil boilers and we install LPG boilers too.

Common jobs

What we fit most on both sides of the Taw

Switching from oil where a gas main is close

Some homes on the edge of town have run on oil for years while a gas main sits nearby. Switching can make sense. It needs a new gas connection from the network operator, which you arrange, then the boiler swap and the old oil tank emptied and taken away safely. We quote the boiler side after a survey.

Combis for long Victorian terraces

Terraces in Newport and Pilton often have the bathroom at the back on the first floor, over a kitchen where the boiler hangs. When we fit a combi, we look at the hot water run to each tap, because a long run means waiting for hot water. Sometimes moving the boiler a few metres solves it.

LPG boilers beyond the gas network

Villages beyond the reach of the gas main often run on LPG from a bulk tank. A modern LPG condensing boiler is close to a gas swap inside the house, and we check the tank position and regulator before fitting. Our LPG boiler installation page covers it in more detail.

Before you book

Getting ready for a new boiler in the old town and the villages

Vehicle access in the centre is limited, with parts of the shopping streets pedestrianised and loading controlled. For a flat over a shop, we plan the delivery and the removal of the old boiler for times a van can get close, and sometimes carry everything from a nearby street. Tell us the access arrangements for your building when you book.

If the flat is in a listed building, ask North Devon Council early whether a new flue needs consent, and keep any reply with your deeds. Reusing the old flue position avoids most of the paperwork. Getting the old boiler down narrow stairs can take time too, so allow for a longer first morning.

Out in the villages, tell us what fuel you use now and where any oil or LPG tank sits. If you are thinking about a heat pump instead of another oil boiler, read about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme before you decide, and ask us to price both options at the survey.

Why Wisp

Why choose Wisp for boiler installation in Barnstaple

01

Tank systems to combi

Older houses in Pilton and Newport often still run a cylinder off a regular boiler. A combi conversion frees the airing cupboard if your mains pressure is up to it.

02

Newer estates

Homes on the newer estates at Roundswell usually make for simpler swaps, with the flue and pipework already in sensible places.

03

Combis for small flats

A combi boiler installation suits most town centre flats where there's no room for a cylinder. We check the gas pipe size, which older conversions often got wrong.

04

Off the gas grid?

Out in the villages some homes run on oil, and we fit those too. See oil boiler installation in Devon.

Questions

Boiler Installation Barnstaple FAQs

I own a flat above a shop on the High Street. Can I get a new boiler?

In most cases, yes. We check whether the existing flue still meets today's clearance rules, whether the gas supply is big enough for a modern combi, and how the old boiler comes out down the stairs. If the building is listed, we'll flag it before quoting.

Can you take out an old back boiler?

Yes. Back boilers behind gas fires still turn up in older houses around town. We remove it safely, make the fireplace good for whatever you want next, and fit a modern boiler somewhere more practical.

Do you cover villages outside the town?

We do, including Braunton, Swimbridge and Chittlehampton. If your village isn't on mains gas, we can quote for an oil or LPG boiler instead, or talk through whether a heat pump makes sense for the house. Rural homes with space outside often suit one.

How disruptive is a combi conversion in a Victorian terrace?

More than a straight swap, less than most people expect. We drain the system, take out the cylinder and loft tanks, cap off the old pipework and fit the combi, often where the old boiler was or in the space the airing cupboard leaves. Some floorboards may need lifting along the pipe runs, and we tell you which at the survey.

Can you put a new boiler in a holiday cottage outside town?

Yes. Plan it outside your letting season and make sure we have keys and a contact for the day. On an oil or LPG cottage, we also look at the tank, its base and the supply line, because there's little point in a new boiler fed from a tank that is near the end of its life.
