If you are on oil, book your service for the summer or early autumn. Engineers get busy once the heating goes on, and a service done early means any worn part is replaced before you need the heat. Make sure there is a reasonable amount of oil in the tank, as the engineer needs the boiler to run for a while to set it up properly.

How much oil should be in the tank before a service?
Enough for the boiler to run steadily while we set it up, so a tank that is not close to empty is fine. Running very low can draw sludge from the bottom of the tank into the fuel line. If your tank is nearly dry, top it up and wait a little while before the visit so any sediment settles.
